Accelerated Reader
This program is designed to encourage students to read daily and improve their
reading skills. All students in grades 1-6 will participate in the program.
Students earn points for reading books and demonstrating understanding of the
story by taking an online AR Quiz. As students accumulate points, they are
rewarded with prizes. Prizes are given out weekly in the library. In addition,
the top three point earners at each grade level will be recognized for their
Accelerated Reader accomplishments at the last Student
Recognition Assembly of the school
year.
Although the structure of the program will not change drastically from our current
library reading program, Accelerated Reader (AR) will provide a powerful,
efficient tool for monitoring and managing students’ independent reading practice.
Students and parents are able to see progress toward reading
goals, conduct book searches using AR BookFinder,
review AR Quiz results, and view the number of books and words read online.
Information and clarification regarding Accelerated
Reader for Miss Cohen's class:
·
On Thursday, please look for a blue Accelerated
Reader book log in the back of your child’s Take Home Folders. The
students will know that this blue log “lives” in their folder, and should be
brought to and from school daily. Students are welcome to begin
taking AR Quizzes next week. I will be giving them their reading level on Friday. Your
child is welcome to take quizzes that are a little higher than their level as
long as they are able to comprehend what they are reading. If you as the
parent are reading the story with them, and they are able to comprehend, they
may take a quiz but will need to press a button that says that they are reading
the book with a parent. The quizzes may be tricky, so it is important that the students are reading books
that they comprehend in order to be able to pass the quiz.
The AR Book Finder link is where students can type the title of their book to ensure it has a quiz on
it. You can use books from any library as long as it can be found on this site.
Students will be encouraged to take 2 or more quizzes a month. This
is not mandatory but is encouraged and can be used as a way to help your
child build their fluency and comprehension skills.
Children will have opportunities to take tests at library time,
computer lab, and in our pod when they are done with class assignments. I will
be retesting children at the end of each trimester (November, March and May).
An important rule for our class: Students
are not allowed to write the title of the book themselves on their book
log. An adult must write the title and the author. AR Quizzes
in our class are taken independently on the computers in the pod during silent
reading time or when a student’s work is finished. Due to this being an
independent activity, students need to be able to log-on and enter the title
correctly in order for the quiz to be taken. Your help with writing the
title of the book on their log ensures that they are able to successfully take
the quiz in a timely manner. Your support and help is greatly
appreciated!!! If you have any questions please let me know.

Elicia Cohen
