Spelling Program
Dear Parents,
Your child will be bringing home a collection of spelling words
weekly that have been introduced in class. Each night of the week your child is
expected to do a different activity to ensure that these words and the spelling
principles they represent are mastered. These activities have been modeled and
practiced in school, so your child can teach you how to do
them.
The following activities are ways you can help your child with
spelling and reinforce what we are doing in school. There is no need to return
any work or materials back to the classroom. These words need to be cut
apart and sorted on Monday, saved and then used again each night.
On Friday, your child will take a spelling/sort
test on the words.
Monday: Introduce and sort new words
Homework: Your child will show you the sort from today’s class. Let your
child do the sort and ask questions such as,“What do you notice about these
words?” and “What is the same about their
spelling?”
Tuesday: Blind Sort
Homework: Your child will sort the words again like yesterday. Then place
the category words (underlined words) on the table. You will then scramble the
words and call them out one at a time. Your child will point to the category in
which the word belongs. Hand the word to your child to place in that column.
Check the sort.
Wednesday: Speed Sort
Homework: Place the category words (underlined words) on the table.
Scramble the rest of the words. Time your child as he/she sorts the words. Check
the sort and add one second for each incorrectly sorted word. Rescramble the
words, leaving the same headings (category words) on the table out. Time your
child a second time. Your child should try to beat his/her first
time.
Thursday: Writing Sort
Homework: Call out the words one at a time as your child writes the words
in categories on paper under the correct category words (underlined words). Your
child should not be able to see the words before writing them. This will help
prepare for Friday’s spelling
test.
Friday: Students will be assessed on the week's words.
